So, I'm a medical student.
I don't have that much spare cash lying around. Or do I? I consider myself pretty good at saving, even though I seem to spend a lot too. My drive for money has lead to part-time jobs coming out of my ears, and they're all pretty well paid ones too.
Recently, I went on holiday. Self-funded apart from the flight, which my dad bought as I needed a credit card (or so I thought) and my limit wasn't high enough. I still have lots of $$ left in my account, something which I probably shouldn't be publicising really. It's not actually that much, but to a uni student who doesn't actually earn a salary? it's quite a bit.
I've always liked to have money lying around. My wallet is usually well-stocked. You'll almost never hear me wanting to go to an ATM as I get tutoring money in cash, the way I pay for my netball team's games and get them to pay me back ends up with me having some cash... my parents give me cash... and so on.
But recently, I've caught the spending bug. Pretty thing? I think I'll buy it! Costs a bit of $$? Never mind, bank account is happy, I can spend! Concert tickets? No problem. Credit card earns me points when I spend, so I'm happy to put things on that, pay it off straightaway and get extra gift vouchers from using the damn thing. In short, I'm an obedient little consumer.
How far is too far, though? I've been contemplating purchasing a Wii for a while. JB has a deal on with Paypal where you get a 10% cashback (did I mention I like to try to find bargains too?). So do I buy a Wii? It's probably not necessary but I know I would use it, as would my brother, my boyfriend... probably even my parents... but then I'd want to buy more games and accessories, the guitar hero/rock band outfit, all that sort of stuff. More money!
And when would I have time to play with all this stuff? After all, I already have a burgeoning knitting/fibre/spinning habit which has lead to a massive stash (though I do have plans for most of it...)
Plus, my dad had a whinge last night about the lack of money in his bank account. I still haven't paid him back for the flight as he hasn't given me his bank details. Perhaps I should look harder into that.
Even so, with my intended working over the summer (at $25/hr, thank you very much Uni...) I will be earning enough hopefully to quit my Safeway job at the start of next year so I won't have to work through final year. Or do I keep working to save for a house? I don't want to be burnt out, yet at the same time, I'm aware of how much everything costs and I know I'll have to save hard...
But for the moment, the question is: do I drop $400-odd on a Wii?
